In our last article we challenged you to name at least one small chocolate company and we introduced to you Nouri.
Today we want to talk to you about another remarkable little chocolate firm and what makes it so special.
May I present to you: Rebel Chocolate.
1. How did you start your chocolate company?
In May 2016, after 20-years of working in biomedical research, I decided to make a significant career change by giving up the lab for chocolate making. I have always been interested in nutrition and its role in health, so the challenge of reformulating confectionery to improve its nutritional profile was of particular interest to me.
We are called Rebel Chocolate because we are rebelling against the chocolate norm and believe chocolate does not have to be filled with cheap and unhealthy ingredients.
Our milk chocolate contains:
1) Half the sugar compared to market leaders.
2) 25% protein for nutritional enrichment.
3) 57% cocoa, twice as much as market leaders.
4) No gluten or lactose, making it available to millions of gluten and lactose-intolerant people.
We use some of the best cocoa in the world so our chocolate tastes amazing but is more nutritionally balanced, making it a far healthier treat.
2. What do you love the most about this industry?
Being inventive and creative to produce unique “healthier” treats that people love to eat.
3. What do your customers prefer? Dark, milk, or white chocolate?
Our main range is milk chocolate, however it is a dark milk chocolate containing 57% cocoa. We currently have 3 varieties of milk chocolate:
· Belgian - classic milk chocolate flavour that we all know and love. Made with a blend of West African cocoa.
· Single Origin Colombian - this is rich, dark and full of flavour - loved by milk and dark chocolate lovers alike.
· Single Estate Madagascan - this is a rare cocoa which displays fruity/tropical flavours.
At the start of the year we produced a limited-edition batch of our white chocolate (44% cocoa and 28% protein) to test the market. This has been hugely popular so we’ve been working hard to make it one of our core products.
Overall, our Single Origin Colombian milk chocolate is our best seller – as it appeals to both dark chocolate and milk chocolate lovers.
4. How do you promote your products?
We have an active Instagram, Twitter and Facebook account that we use to promote our products. We also attend food festivals and wellness/fitness events where we promote our products. We are also trying to grow our mailing list to promote our products via email (in line with GDPR of course!)
We do our own responsive PR (through Smoothie PR www.smoothiepr.com) as a way to raise our profile and engage with different audiences.
5. Do you think social media networks nowadays are important for a firm? If yes, how so?
Yes – they allow you to create a personality for your brand and engage with existing and potential customers. If you are like us and have no budget for marketing, social media networks provide free channels for you to promote yourself and get discovered by new audiences.
6. What is a milestone that you accomplished in your company?
Surviving for one and a half years!
7. What do you want to communicate to your customers?
That you can get your chocolate-fix and good nutrition all at the same time! Sugar is the cheapest ingredient in chocolate and it can be used to mask the imperfections in poorer quality cocoa. We believe that by using really high-quality cocoa there is no need for all that sugar. And what better thing to replace the sugar with than high-quality protein!
8. What’s your favourite chocolate recipe?
The Rebel Chocolate recipes of course 😉
High quality. Customer care. Health. Nutrition. Attention to details and flavour. And such a catchy name.
These are only few of the perks of Rebel Chocolate.
This brand also won the Scottish SME Business Award, so it's certified that it's amazing!
You can purchase their chocolate bars in their online store, and let me tell you: not only they're delicious, but for such a little price you'll want to buy all of it!
